Lawyers Get “Up to Date” on Municipal Court Practice
Yesterday, I had the privilege of presenting a seminar, “ Nuts and Bolts of Municipal Court Practice”, to members of the Camden County Bar Association at Tavistock Country Club. The seminar was a 2 hour and 15 minute continuing legal education seminar designed to inform and enhance the attendees knowledge of municipal court practice. Although, the the seminar was designed for attorneys new to municipal court practice, numerous experienced attorneys were in attendance. The seminar presented the perspective from defense attorneys, prosecutors, as well as the bench and covered the following topics, among others: • Filing appearance • Motion to suppress evidence • Please & Plea Agreements • Discovery • R 7:8-9 Failure to appear • R 7:10-2 Post conviction relief • Diversions • Disorderly Persons Offenses • Petty Disorderly Persons Offenses • Assault, Reckless Endangering, Threats • Burglary & Other Criminal Intrusion • Shoplifting • Disorderly Conduct & Related Offenses • Controlled Dangerous Substances • Driving While Suspended • Leaving the Scene of Accident • No Insurance • Speeding The seminar proved to be very educational with great audience participation. A significant portion of the seminar was dedicated to DUI/DWI, as this was the topic that was of most interest to the attendees. Detailed materials including practice forms were provided to all attendees, which help make the seminar so successful. As chairperson of the Camden County Bar Association's Municipal Court Practice Committee, I look forward to presenting additional seminars in the future. I encourage any member of the bar association to contact me if you have particular legal issue or topic that you would like addressed at a future seminar.
